Went to the Vic for my friends birthday and had a great meal. The fresh fish was perfectly cooked and sauce was amazing! Service was good as well and we even had a beer matched to our dessert! It’s great to try something new. The vic is a really cool bar/restaurant with nice food. I would definatly reccomend you pay a visit

Attempted to go here for a drink before dinner on Easter Sunday only to get turned away by a rather abrupt bar waitress because we were not prepared to buy “substantial meals” to accompany the drinks.

We wanted to have a glass of wine each and share some fries and bread & dips (between 2 people) however once the bar waitress had already poured the drinks and we attempted to order the snacks to accompany them we were told that we could only consume the drinks if we purchased “substantial meals”. When we asked for clarification we were told that we needed to stay and order at least one main meal each from the dinner menu.

Having already booked into another restaurant to eat dinner we were forced to abandon the pub altogether, leaving our poured drinks at the bar to go to waste.

This seems a bit ridiculous on three counts:
1. I have purchased snacks with alcohol at numerous other pubs on Easter Sunday / Good Friday before. The Sale of Liquor Act says that alcohol can only be supplied to any person present on the premises for the purpose of dining – in my opinion eating fries and bread & dips is dining

2. This pub appears to enforce this rule so that they maximise their revenues by selling main meals to all customers wanting a drink

3. The pub now has two drinks that have been poured which they cannot sell

Shame that they didn’t serve us as it looked like a great place to have a drink.

I am very sorry to hear that your experience at our establishment did not meet up to expectations and that you felt one of our team members was too abrupt in their approach in dealing with the extremely complex Easter trading restrictions that we have to deal with.
I agree with you 100% on the ridiculousness of these rules and believe there should be changes in these trading laws, however it is the “purpose of dining” part of the issue that is unclear to the customer, however, since your feedback I have sought further information on this from Police, DLA & hospitality NZ.
I agree with you on the matter of what you had ordered being acceptable, however, the authorities have a different view on this. In terms of what actually constitutes “dining” much depends on the circumstances, but a few matters in respect of “dining” are clear. If opening for dining on any of Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and before 1pm on Anzac Day “snack food” will not be considered sufficient to meet the requirements of “dining”. To constitute dining the food should therefore be something more than “snack food” and the dining activity should be the main purpose for the persons actually being on the premises.
It’s a real shame that these rather out dated laws should dictate that adults over the age of 18 should be restricted in this way over a holiday that people want to enjoy as much as possible before winter sets in! I hope that if you decide to return to The Vic that you will be able to enjoy the full experience.

Everything was great – food delicious – ordered fish and chips, soup of the day – potato and leek yummy and a filo stuffed with cranberry and chicken. Loved it all with chilled beers. Welcoming staff, quick service, and delicious food. I would also recommend stables restaurant in richmond.

I had a lovely pork burger today at Vic Brew bar. i strongly recommend it. service was great too. Lovely waitress with soft Irish accent.

I just got home from a meal at The Vic, and it was such an excellent experience, I had to come and place a positive review immediately!
I had dinner here on a Tues night with a friend. The Vic was moderately busy, the service was quick and friendly. What really put this place above the rest, was how eager the staff was to accommodate my friend’s allergies to herbs and spices, to the point that they created a meal for her. This meal was particularly amazing, she says the best she’s ever had.
My meal was delicious as well. Different yet hearty and at a good price.
We both agree that this was the best overall dining experience that we have ever had.

Really impressed with this place. It has high quality pub food and a good range of choices on the menu. Especially love the chicken burger. Nice atmosphere too.
