I was really pleased to find a place which offers so many gluten free options as I have quite a bad case of coeliacs disease. The first time I went here, I had a salad which was labeled GF and I also asked at the counter to double-check, it was. But had such a severe reaction. I gave it another chance and when I double-checked that what I was having was gluten free I got a very rude answer of “well that’s what it says”. Yet again had an awful reaction. I am never going back, and it is unfair for them to label things GF which are not GF. I also had a friend get something vegan, which they served with cheese.

This is definitely my fave place to go for coffee. Love the decor and intimate feel to the place. Free arcade games at the back definitelty a win! Must try the cinnamon pinwheels and wedges.

Best cafe environment in Dunedin imo. The coffee has always been well made. I tend to like a much stronger coffee but that doesn’t stop me from having 2 to make up for it. The food is very nice, some delicious sweets there that in combo with the coffee is a hell of a treat.

Divine coffee, some of the best in Dunedin, friendly service and loved the savoury pinwheel scone. Friendly relaxed atmosphere.

I recommend the moreish crunchy Cajun fries. The coffee is fantastic and up to a top standard (you cant go wrong with a fabulous Modak long black.) They also make refreshing milkshakes which is an added quirky bonus.
It has an artsy/muso ‘cool kids club’ atmosphere but is warm and welcoming to all types of people. There is usually plenty of local art displayed on the walls which adds to the vibe.
It reminds me a lot of the urban Artsy Melbourne cafes and coffee shops in Brunswick street.

Modaks has great counter food, coffee & fries that people come from across town to munch. Its an old skool creative, muso, student cafe with that laidback atmosphere which also attracts a wide diversity of people. Sunday mornings you can find suburban types hoeing into bacon & eggs brekkies and friday afternoons its high school kids looking for a ‘cool’ place to hang out. With a casting call of artistic locals. Don’t let your eye fool you. That scruffy type sitting reading the paper may be a famous local electronic dj. Its excellent coffee and food with an unpretentious welcoming slice of Dunedins creative life.
