Reviews for La Mama Cafe

Have read some reviews and recalled my experience…
Can’t say anything about food – had no chance to try. Some time ago my partner and me came to the restaurant and asked a waitress if we may get couple of drinks (we were not going to have dinner). The answer was – NO, unless you order food. Quite unusual, I’d say. We asked if we can have drinks at a bar – answer was some why NO! OK, few free tables might be reserved (though no signs could be seen) – the restaurant was pretty busy at the moment. But this rudeness… I often walk by this place but never wish to come in again. There are many other nice places around…

There’s a guy with an ascot. He says it’s his place. I think he has asperger syndrome. I’m being really generous, I can’t think of any other acceptable reason for his incredible rudeness. He evidently hates anyone from North America and is too ignorant to realize that people are actually individuals and not some part of an evil group conspiracy to destroy his race and the entire world. The food was okay but he ruined the whole experience with his myopic idiocy. Save your money.

Our table of four were gushing over the meals we were served! I had the chicken livers (as usual) and (as usual) was left satisfied – even more so after my main meal of “Rustic Duck.” One of our friends opted for a main and dessert, and we were all permitted a bite of fruit crumble, which we were all impressed with. La Mama is very cosy, it’s nice to sit in there out of the rain. I feel the staff were good at making sure we were comfortable – asking whether the music was too loud in out particular spot, and whether or not we would like the windows open etc.
A beautiful location, with delicious food and a friendly vibe.

Nice views and decor But over an hour quarter to wait for food. Lamb Shank was stew in filo pastry on part cooked rice. Male waiter(?) more interested with his cravat and chatting to the 3 girls when they could be clearing empty plates and taking orders. As is usual very noisy, why no drapes or sound deadening??

If you’ve read a bad review about this restaurant, forget it – the review, not the restaurant. We had a wonderful night out – starting with easy parking, friendly staff, discreet service, delicious food……..what more could we say? I have special dietary needs being a Coeliac – I didn’t inform them of this when I booked but the waitperson checked my meal request with the chef and it was easily resolved – no fuss and still a delicious meal. Would we go back? YES, you bet. Would we recommend La Mammas to our friends? ABSOLUTELY! *****

I’ve eaten at La mama three times already within the past two months and thought it was about time to share the overall experience.
First, La mama is one very sexy restaurant, beautiful and wonderful views …
The last visit I decided on the homemade linguini which is not always easy to get a good linguini and i enjoyed it very much …
For wine the manager suggested an Italian Pinot Noir which is quite unusual for the Italians heheh, yet again a very good decision on la mama part.
Service has never been anything other than friendly, welcoming and wonderful. One visit was a business dinner, they knew exactly when to clear and when to give us time to discuss.
Highly recommended for nice dinner or a rather special evening …

Its usually a good sign walking into a busy restaurant…unfortunately our party of 6 had to wait for an hour and a half for the first meals to emerge (wouldn’t have minded if we had have been given an apology or update on timing, or even asked if we wanted any drinks). As i’m 6 months pregnant I was rather concerned when my mussels arrived luke warm (especially after 1 1/2hr wait), so asked for my meal to be heated up. When it came back it was slightly warmer, still a million miles from hot fresh mussels, so I didn’t want to risk eating it and requested some garlic bread. Also 2 of our party had to go and enquire as to where their meal was, while 3 others had pretty much finished their dinner!Eventually i was brought garlic bread and dips to eat after the rest of the family had long finished their dinners. Just to add insult to injury, we were then completely ignored by all waiting staff, who had taken away the water jug, and made no attempt to ask us if we wanted any drinks, desert or coffee. By this stage the restaurant had emptied out aswell, so they could have easily made up for the earlier disaster. I would have done anything for a ginger ale and ice cream sunday!Gutted…utterly crap service and food.

I had a really good evening at La Mama. The new menu was outstanding, and presentation excellent. I especially liked the Chicken Livers with caramelised onion. I had the mustard crusted Lamb Rack as a main, which came with truffle mash. Also really good. I was impressed with the wine list, that included a couple of italian options, along with a good array of NZ and Australian wines. The service was just the right balance of helpful, but not too in your face.
I recommend it to everyone, and I’ll definitely be telling my friends about it.

When the booking was changed from 12 to 17 with no problem on a Friday night, we should have known! The table received eight pieces of garlic bread for 17 people, the meals were sooo small, that we all went home hungry. The presentation was non existent, just food plonked on the plate. The meals came with lumpy mashed potato or pumpkin, and a small boiled onion. Greens consisted of a tablespoon of wilted spinach. The bowl of extra veges came with cauliflower that was brown on top. Not brave enough to order desert, I went home for some toast. Prices were way over the top for the product served.
