Food quality is very good. The environment is very nice. This is a high class Thai restaurant.
We found the service slow but friendly.
The prices are quite a lot higher than you will find at suburban Thai’s. They even charge $2.50 per serving of rice for each person.
But if you dont mind paying more, then this place is worth it for a high class, inner city experience.

Impressive interior (chandaliers, high ceiling and shiny wooden floor), and friendly (if not very polished) service. Was apprehensive about the food after an average lunch here which featured bland curry and small portions; however, my dinner experience last night was more than satisfactory. The large plates had well presented food which would probably have been better shared (because of the portion sizes, and so you can have some salad with your curry, for instance). Flavours had general appeal (lots of coconut cream in curries), making this a safe choice to take your rellies to. Grandma was the most enthusiastic I had seen her, scooping up her prawn fried rice well after she said she was full.

The decor is amazing. The music and the atmosphere however is a bit Europeanized as 90′s music was mostly played.
Service was okay, very frequently refilled our drinks which was good, however, waitresses seem to be a bit rude when taking our orders and serving our food.
Would recommend if you’re into unauthentic Thai food and a slightly over-priced menu.
Mostly adapted for European taste buds in my opinion. Definitely has the right spices but isn’t what I would consider REAL Thai food.

Arrived for dinner and found the atmosphere very pleasant and relaxing. You walk past the take away service waiting area and notice the very nice decor keeping with the Thai theme. The large windows overlooking the street give the venue a sense of real space.
Sat and ordered the Tom Yum Soup and Chicken Thai Green curry, both Thai hot.
The entree, Tom Yum Soup, was as expected and ordered in terms of spiciness. The mushrooms were soft, tender and fluffy. The tomatoes held their shape and were firm. The prawns were well cooked and shelled. The soup was well balanced and tasty.
The shaped rice was on a plate after being tipped from a small bowl. It was presented and cooked well.
The Green Curry sauce had a beautiful flavour and consistency, not runny. The chicken pieces were cut flat and tasted tender not dry. The vegetables were crunchy except the eggplant which was beautifully soft with a contrasting firm outer. The dish was Thai hot as ordered.
The serving portions were perfect and the whole meal was reasonably priced. Service was friendly and efficient. The seats were very comfortable.
Recommend this restaurant as one of the best authentic Thai restaurants I have been to in Auckland.

Came here with a big group thinking it might be a bit “posh” for us after a few drinks – in fact it was great. Delicious food, great value, relaxed atmosphere and very good service. Also I made the booking by email and they were very prompt to confirm the reservation. Would recommend to couples or any size of group.

I have come here for lunch and dinner. Although their lunch menu is cheaper I prefer coming here for dinner because it has that perfect atmosphere for a relaxing dinner.
Personally this is by far the best thai restaurant that I have been to. I would hands down come here over Mai Thai any day because whereas Mai Thai is overrated, overpriced and the food feels like it has been hastily prepared, Khao Thai offers food which is delicious everytime at prices which reflect their quality.
I would suggest trying the flaming chicken which comes out literally “flaming”, the basil chicken if you feel like a great stir fry or the thai beef salad where the flavours are bang on with plenty of beef

Khao is pretty much my go-to restaurant downtown. I’ve been there a lot and haven’t run into any problems yet.
Their lunch menu is cheaper than most of the places around the Chancery/High St, so that’s good for workmates.
For dinner, probably the biggest group I’ve eaten with was eight people, and we all got our mains at the same time. They’ve been cool with splitting bills.
I like that other Thai place, Grasshopper up on Albert St, too, but for some reason Khao just feels better to eat in.

Rating based on the well-priced lunch menu. The food is gorgeous, with the best penang I have experienced. You can expect a nice atmosphere, fast and efficient service, along with a not too shabby wine list. All round, very good. With a broad range on the chili-o-meter, kiwi-hot spicy – bang on the money.

Overall Excellent, my wife and I were well received, the menu was well laid out and easy, more so with my wife who suffers from Coeliac Disease ( Gluten Free ) all staff were aware which is a help, the wait was minimal and the food plentiful and very tasty ( well done chef ) dinning area needs a little attention but over all would recommend and we will be going back again soon Thanks
