We took friends from Brisbane for an evening meal and we all very thrilled with the whole experience. Our friends eat Thai regularly and said it was as good as they had ever eaten. The service was top notch and the staff could not do enough for us. The food was delivered at a nice pace and the whole evening was great. When we return to Tauranga next we intend to revisit with our family.
Top spot. Gary

Went to lunch with a group of 12 people, pre-ordered off the menu on their website so meals were all served quickly. Presentation was great and service was friendly and efficient. Everyone loved their meals and we are planning to return again soon.

OVERALL for me this was a joke, service was extremely poor – staff were school kids who had little to no knowledge of hospitality, the menu and how to wait tables. We ended up walking out without even getting our mains after waiting 2 hours. With the prices charged, you expect more. See below for the full story!
After hearing some amazing reviews and seeing them myself online, i thought it would be a great idea to take my partner to Collar & Thai for Valentines.. we are big fans of Thai food so we were looking forward to this!
Had the table booked for 7pm, and we arrived a few minutes after. We were seated at a table that had no glassware, plates or cutlery and given menus..
25 minutes later, the waiter comes and asks if we are ready to order. Yes we reply, and can we have some water? We place our order which includes a couple of glasses of wine.
15 minutes later, our water turns up.
A further 10 minutes after this, our wines turn up.
Around 25 minutes after that our entree’s turn up. We have been here for well over an hour now. They are OK, nothing to rave about though, i had Satay Gai, and my parter had Vegetarian Spring Rolls. We also ask for a couple more drinks as the wines are long gone. These turn up 15minutes later, and are wrong. So they are sent off to be remade.
Entrees are done, and now we await mains.
The wait continues.. then… our entrees turn up again, 40minutes after we received the last! They are sent back, but at this stage we have now been sitting down for 2 hours. No one came and asked if we wanted more drinks and we were simply ignored. Tables around us were complaining of wrong meals, long waits and poor service aswell which quickly painted a clear picture for us.. the Kitchen and wait staff had no idea what they were doing.
As new customers, we will be sure not to return.

Service counts for alot! even though the food wasnt out of this world. it was the service that sold me over. I have to say that I am not a big Thai fan so I wont bla on about the food. It tastes like Thai always tastes to me, alot of veggies in sauce. i had the duck veggie salad dish, and it was ok. would I go again? yes, def. would I recommend it to the world, if you are a big Thai fan, you be the verdict. (its not cheap!)

Actually disappointing. I’ve had far better Chinese take away’s… $10 Pak n Save wines are on the menu for $35 – $45 and no BYO so you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Food was ‘lank’ – not crisp, fresh and zingy like good Thai. Service was OK but restaurant was relatively quiet.

Very bland food at a very high price, won’t go again or recommend to anyone who enjoys authentic Thai cuisine.

Group of 12 went for dinner last night and after reading the recent reviews i was a little sceptical. We had a wonderful evening although the restaurant was not very busy we had great service and the food was superb, fresh and generous servings. A few of us ordered prawn dishes and they were beautifully cooked and of the highest quality. Well done. I will definitely be back.

I have been here many times before, and never really left feeling like it was amazing. But this week i went with 5 other people to a fairly empty resturant and was very dissapointed. I will never go back to the collar and Thai as there is so much better Thai food for less money and better service in this area. There was 1 lady running the entire floor, seating, drinks, orders, bringing the meals out (which were starting to get that thick layer on the top from sitting too long) and doing the register. She was stomping around obviously frazzled. We had to ‘wave’ her down everytime we needed something. We requested some corriander for our meals and when we waved her down for the 2nd time she told me that they only had a very small amount left, i found it terrible for a thai resturant to be running out of ingrediants early into the evening. All in all, was just a very bad, awkard dining experience.

One for the best places for lunches around the $10 – 15 mark in Tauranga CBD!
(Dined Jan 09 – May09)
Great value for money, food slightly on the bland side for what you would consider Thai food, however, if you want it hoter, they appear only too happy to guide you towards those dishes or attend to your request. Great way to introduce others to something different.
Not the husttle & bustle of other cafes in town during lunch as it’s upstairs which is really nice. Decor suits.
Group booking was not a problem (went December 2008), sent menu, pre ordered and were definately served in a timely manner, all with correct dishes and hot (not going cold!).
Will definately lunch there again.
Can not comment on dinner.

Very overpriced, yellow curry was requested with extra hotness – if that was the case the normal must be bland bland bland. $7 a glass for what tasted like cask wine. $80 for two mains, 1 entree, rice and one glass of wine – too much for average food. There are probably better and cheaper options.

not sure if this restaurant has changed hands but it is kiwi thai at its best from the name to the food. it is over priced, lacks any authenticity and flavour. none of the tart tamarind or zing of lime or freshness of lemongrass. average meal

In our opinion this is the best thai restaurant in Tauranga.
Have nearly sampled the entire menu and all the dishes have amazing flavour and some secret chef ingredient that you just cant replicate at home.
Friendly staff.
Never disappoints.
